This is especially true for some of us who have certain medical conditions. Besides that, a central air conditioning system also acts as a central dehumidifier! Having a properly size and operating system maintains a healthy range of humidity in the home. Please see the chart below to understand the impact humidity has in the home.
As you can see, we have an optimum zone that we would like to maintain year-round. Ideally, 50%-60% in the summer and >30% in the winter are our realistic goals for your health during these seasons.
Proper humidity levels also plays a role in energy efficiency!
Having lower humidity in the summer (within the ideal range) can make the home feel cooler, thereby rejecting the need to lower the thermostat to get comfortable. The same goes in the winter. A higher humidity will make the home feel warmer, thus negating the need to raise the thermostat to feel comfortable.
Air Conditioning Maintenance Services
Let’s start with some truths; there are two main components in an AC system (usually). Everybody knows about the outdoor unit, the “air conditioner”, however, most people are shocked when we inform them that there is another component inside the home. The air handler or furnace. This is the part that circulated the air within the home, and sometimes contains the air filter.
Let’s get down to brass tacks. The MOST important thing to do to maintain your central air condition system is to change the filter. We have an article about filters HERE you can look at and its worth a read.

Here is a comprehensive list of the steps we take when servicing your air conditioning system:
Outside
- Remove outdoor unit cover and clear debris in the base
- Spray loose dirt off coil from inside-out
- Treat coil with cleaner
- Rinse and repeat if necessary
- Straighten bent fins (additional charges may apply)
- Inspect wiring and copper lines for damage/rubbing
- Check plumb and level of unit, ensure stability
- Visually inspect control panel
- After starting unit, check airflow of fan, starting voltages/current
- Check capacitor(s) and contactor
- Check refrigerant pressures after 15 minutes
Inside
- Inspect/change filter
- Inspect blower drive and check capacitor (if applicable)
- Remove panel for evaporator and clean/inspect coil
- Clean and treat drain pan, drain lines, and condensate pump
- Check safety devices
- After starting system, check airflow/static pressures
- After 15 minutes, check loading of system
